What is knee pain?
Knee pain is a common ailment that can affect people of all ages.
Knee pain may occur:
- suddenly, usually as a result of a sports injury, such as a torn ligament or ligament rupture,
- or it may be due to a degenerative process over a period of time, usually arthritis.
Mild cases of knee pain can be corrected with self-care and rest.
In other more severe cases when rest does not work, Dr. Alfonso Porcar may recommend regenerative physiotherapy treatments and orthopedic surgery.
Causes of knee pain
Causes related to knee injuries include damage to parts of the knee, such as bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons or muscles.
- Patellar Tendonitis: Resulting from inflammation of the tendon that attaches the patella to the tibia. It is called runner’s knee or jumper’s knee.
- Knee bursitis: Is the inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs or bursae that cushion the knee. It is usually a consequence of tendinitis.
- Knee osteoarthritis: occurs when joint cartilage wears away and causes pain, stiffness and swelling.
- Chondromalacia Patellae: is the softening and loss of cartilage in the kneecap. It occurs in young and adult athletes suffering from knee arthritis.
- Bone marrow edema of the knee: inflammation or injury in the medullary zone of the knee, due to a contusion, with the appearance of microfracture and inflammation.
- Sprained knee ligaments: Are usually due to sports injuries. Special mention to the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament.
- Meniscopathy – Meniscus tear: common in athletes, contact sports. In older people degenerative meniscus tears.
What are the symptoms of knee pain?
There are a multitude of manifestations of knee pain.
Some occur even when the knee is at rest, while others appear when we perform certain actions such as pain when supporting, bending, or stretching the knee…..
The severity and location of knee pain can vary, and depends on the initial cause of the pain, whether it is an injury or a medical condition.
Signs and symptoms that may be associated with knee pain include the following:
- Stiffness and swelling.
- Instability or weakness when pressure is applied to the knee.
- Heat on touching the knee, usually accompanied by redness.
- The knee begins to make cracking or popping noises.
- Inability to straighten the knee completely.
If these symptoms persist, it is important that you call your doctor if
- You are unable your knee is unstable and does not support your weight.
- You have an obvious deformity in your knee or leg.
- You cannot fully flex or extend the knee.
- You have a fever, as well as swelling and redness of the knee.
- You have severe knee pain resulting from an injury.
- You have marked swelling of the knee.
Risk Factors
Anyone can be at risk for knee pain. It is a condition that can occur at any stage of life; however, these factors increase the risk:
- Increasing age – Aging: As we age, the body weakens and develops conditions such as osteoarthritis, which affects the bones and joints.
- Athletes: people who play sports such as basketball, skiing or athletics on a regular basis experience more wear and tear due to continued use and are more susceptible to knee pain.
- Overweight people put more pressure on their knees.
- People who do not develop leg muscles to help support their joints.
Diagnosis of knee pain
Dr. Alfonso Porcar, expert in knee pathologies and injuries, performs the diagnosis of knee pain.
- To do this, he will initially evaluate your medical history and then perform a physical examination or evaluation.
- In Regenerat clinic we use high resolution ultrasound-guided ultrasound, within the physical examination of the patient to, in real time, evaluate the injured tissues, make a correct treatment and to observe the evolution over time of the injury or knee pain.
- In cases where it may be necessary, we may request additional imaging tests.
Treatments for knee pain
Multidisciplinary pain management for complex cases with chronic knee pain may include platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and other forms of regenerative medicine.
Platelet Rich Plasma PRP Injections
- PRP is a product derived from blood. PRP does not contain stem cells.
- PRP accelerates recovery and healing of tendon, joint and muscle injuries.
- PRP is used as an adjuvant in surgeries to improve the result.
- PRP reduces arthritic and spinal pain and heals sports injuries.
PRP infiltrations are used in traumatology to stimulate the natural healing response that achieves the recovery of mobility, strength and normality of injured tissue.
This biological therapy induces the mechanisms for healing, rather than replacing the injured area with a knee prosthesis or artificial joint.
Intraosseous Injections
Intraosseous injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and/or bone marrow concentrate into the bone are indicated when osteoarthritis is severe and small cracks or microfractures develop in the subchondral bone, causing pain and limiting function.
They are used as an alternative prior to a total knee or hip replacement.
Hyaluronic Acid Knee Injections
- Hyaluronic acid infiltration consists in the application of a viscoelastic substance to improve the quality of the synovial fluid.
- This viscosupplementation reduces joint pain and improves the functional state of the degenerated or arthritic joint.
Indicated in patients with osteoarthritis or degenerative changes of the cartilage, delaying its evolution and even the need for a joint prosthesis.
It is commonly used in the knee joint, even in young patients with chondromalacia patella, improving their quality of life and slowing down its evolution.
Prolotherapy
A technique involving the injection of an irritant, usually a hyperosmolar dextrose solution, usually in the treatment of chronic painful musculoskeletal conditions.
Prolotherapy is commonly applied in the management of chronic joint pain such as knee, low back and shoulder.
It is recognized as a reliable and effective treatment method for certain conditions, including osteoarthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, as well as muscle and ligament strains.
Several studies have shown the ability to tighten andstrengthen lax anterior cruciate ligaments, improving knee osteoarthritis.
Our regenerative therapy with prolotherapy simultaneously provides pain relief and helps tissue regeneration by activating these stem cells.
QREM Cytokine: Autologous serum rich in cytokines.
- SARC contains cytokines, cell-released proteins and activators of the repair system.
- These substances guide the cells towards the regeneration process.
- Cytokines are a type of signaling molecules used in cellular communication and enhance healing in those cases where the tissue is in worse condition.
- The cytokine-rich serum promotes decreased inflammation and activates cartilage repair.
Autologous serum rich in cytokines achieves up to 75% pain reduction for more than one year in patients with osteoarthritis.
No medication and no side effects.
