What is foot pain or ankle pain?
Most people who suffer from foot and ankle pain complain that the source of the pain is the heel.
There are two main areas where pain occurs, on the back surface of the heel and on the undersurface of the foot, called the plantar fascia.
Although painful foot and ankle conditions may not cause disability or generate severe pain, they can affect a person’s ability to walk, stand or perform any type of running activity.
Depending on the severity and cause of the ankle pain or foot pain, treatments can provide instant relief and, in more extreme cases, physical therapy or surgery.
The orthopedic surgeon Dr. Miguel Alfonso Porcar will be able to diagnose the precise causes of your symptoms and offer you the most appropriate treatment to solve your foot or ankle pain and prevent it from recurring.
Mild cases of ankle pain can be corrected with self-care and rest, but in some more severe cases, physical therapy treatments , regenerative medicine and orthopedic surgery may be necessary.
Causes of ankle or foot pain
Anyone can be at risk for foot or ankle pain, as it can result from injury or everyday wear and tear.
Some factors can increase the likelihood of a person suffering from foot and ankle pain include the following:
- Ankle osteoarthritis: Occurs when the surface of the cartilage of the ankle begins to wear away. This causes inflammation, stiffness and pain in the joint.
- Achilles tendonitis treatment: For the inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which can be very painful. In the absence of treatment, it becomes a long-term chronic problem that makes walking difficult.
- Peroneal tendonitis – tendinopathy:Peroneal tendonitis causes pain on the outside of the foot and leg when walking or running. Peroneal tendonitis is rare and is caused by overuse that affects athletes, such as runners and long distance runners.
- Plantar fasciitis treatment: Plantar fasciitis is a degenerative disease of the thick band of tissue (fascia) on the bottom of the foot, which runs from the heel to the toes.
- Bunions: mainly affect women due to the use of narrow shoes or heels. They manifest as painful bumps on the big toe. When the pain is persistent or the deformity is severe, the percutaneous bunion operation percutaneous bunion operation is the best solution.
- Other foot and ankle conditions: calcaneal spur…
What are the symptoms of foot pain and ankle pain?
Signs and symptoms of foot and ankle pain include
- Localized pain, swelling and stiffness that are worse in the morning and after prolonged sitting.
- Sensitivity when someone touches or squeezes the joint.
- Swelling may occur in the entire ankle or on one side only.
- Decreased range of motion, meaning that the ankle does not bend or flex fully.
- Difficulty walking due to pain, stiffness and loss of movement.
Risk Factors
People who engage in exercise such as running and other high-impact exercise are at increased risk for Achilles tendonitis, peroneal tendonitis, plantar fasciitis and other ankle injuries.
Some diseases increase the risk of foot pain and ankle pain.
Diabetes, people who are overweight or obese, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or gout predispose to an increased risk of ankle injuries and pain.
Diagnosis of foot pain – ankle pain
Dr. Miguel Alfonso Porcar, a traumatologist specializing in foot and ankle pathologies and injuries, diagnoses ankle pain.
He or she will initially evaluate your medical history and then perform a physical examination or evaluation.
- A thorough clinical examination and,
- More advancedimaging is useful to accurately define the origin of the pain and, therefore, the best treatment for each individual.
- At Clinica Regenerat we use high resolution ultrasound. Ultrasound is useful to identify factors that can guide the best treatment (such as the severity of tendon wear, the presence of “neovessels” and the effects of different movements on the appearance of the tendon).
- In cases where it may be necessary, we may request additional imaging tests such as magnetic resonance imaging.
Ankle and Foot Injection: Treatments for Foot or Ankle Pain
There are a variety of treatments available for people experiencing ankle and/or foot pain and injuries.
Initially, for most of the pathologies that cause foot and ankle pain, we can start with gait studies and unloading insoles, stretching exercises, shoes with heel pads, shock wave treatment, in addition to the use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs .
In multidisciplinary pain management for more complex cases with chronic ankle and/or foot pain, we can perform various types of ankle or foot infiltrations: corticosteroid injections, prolotherapy injections (dextrose solution), foot or ankle infiltration with hyaluronic acid, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, autologous cytokine-rich serum and other forms of regenerative medicine, as options prior to surgery.
If with the previous treatments we do not obtain the desired results, we can resort to arthroscopic surgery.
Ankle-foot injection with hyaluronic acid
Intra-articular hyaluronic acid infiltration in the foot or ankle has a strong anti-inflammatory effect and is indicated in patients with osteoarthritis or degenerative changes of the foot and ankle cartilage, delaying its evolution and even the need for a joint prosthesis.
For the application of acid infiltrations in the ankle joint we use the anteromedial route (medial to the tibialis anterior) with a previous infiltration of local anesthesia.
The technique of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid infiltration is commonly used in the treatment of ankle osteoarthritis, improving your quality of life and slowing its progression .
QREM Infiltration of the foot or ankle: Autologous Cytokine-Rich Serum
The autologous serum rich in cytokines (Q-rem cytokine) is effective for the treatment of ankle osteoarthritis in the early stages of degeneration, reducing pain due to its natural anti-inflammatory properties.
Thus we will inject inside the damaged joint, an adequate amount of platelet concentrates associated with anti-inflammatory cytokines responsible for reducing inflammation and initiating the regenerative cycle.
Autologous serum rich in cytokines achieves up to 75% pain reduction for more than one year in patients with osteoarthritis.
Foot-Ankle treatment with Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections
PRP infiltrations stimulate the natural healing response for the recovery of mobility, strength and normality of injured tissue.
This biological therapy induces the mechanisms for healing, rather than replacing the injured area with a prosthesis or artificial joint.
– PRP is a blood-derived product.
– PRP accelerates the recovery and healing of tendon, joint and muscle injuries.
– PRP heals sports injuries and is used as an adjuvant in surgery to improve the outcome.
– PRP reduces arthrosis and spinal pain…
