Hyaluronic Acid Gel Injections for the Knee

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that makes up the synovial fluid.

In its normal state, this synovial fluid is very rich in hyaluronic acid, which lubricates and protects the articular surfaces.

When osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, ankle, or shoulder develops, the synovial fluid loses hyaluronic acid, making the cartilage more vulnerable to friction and compression forces.

Intra-articular hyaluronic acid injections restore the properties of the synovial fluid, protecting the arthritic joint from wear and tear.

Specialists in hyaluronic acid gel injections in knee, hip… in Valencia

I am Miguel Alfonso Porcar, a recognised specialist in traumatology and orthopaedic surgery.

At the Regenerat clinic, we are leaders in the treatment of joint degeneration in the knee, hip, shoulder, and ankle through the injection of hyaluronic acid to treat osteoarthritis.

We use hyaluronic acid injections to help our patients return to their optimal level of health and function, often avoiding the need for joint surgery or prosthesis placement.

We also employ the same orthobiological techniques to accelerate recovery, minimise complications, and increase the success rate of certain trauma surgeries.

What are Hyaluronic Acid gel Injections for the Hip or Knee?

Injections of hyaluronic acid in the knee, hip, shoulder, or ankle are a highly effective treatment for reducing joint pain caused by conditions such as osteoarthritis, bone edema, and patellar chondromalacia, as well as meniscus tears.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in our bodies that is responsible, among other functions, for lubricating the joints.

Due to various conditions such as osteoarthritis, the concentration of hyaluronic acid in the joint decreases or becomes depleted, resulting in joint pain.

In these cases, the injection of hyaluronic acid into the knee or hip joint can restore the joint environment and relieve pain.

Effects of intra-articular hyaluronic acid injections

  • Anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect: HA affects leukocyte function by inhibiting phagocytosis, adherence, and stimulating mitosis.

Intra-articular knee injections of hyaluronic acid reduce the levels of inflammatory mediators in synovial fluid in patients with osteoarthritis.

  • Lubricating, anabolic, and chondroprotective effect: Intra-articular knee injections of high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid stimulate synoviocytes to produce higher-quality synovial fluid, which helps protect the damaged joint.

Indications for Hyaluronic acid intra-articular injections in knee, hip or ankle

Hyaluronic acid intra-articular injections are recommended when conservative measures have failed to relieve joint pain and disability due to osteoarthritis, and when surgery is undesirable or unwarranted.

Its use is indicated for patients with osteoarthritis or degenerative changes in the articular cartilage, delaying its progression and potentially reducing the need for joint prosthesis.

Hyaluronic acid injections are commonly used in the knee joint. They can be beneficial even for young patients with chondromalacia patellae, improving their quality of life and slowing disease progression, with minimal side effects beyond slight discomfort or temporary swelling.

Injections of Hyaluronic Acid in the Knee

We use hyaluronic acid injections to reduce knee pain and improve symptoms of conditions such as knee osteoarthritis, chondropathy, patellar chondromalacia, intraosseous edema of the knee, and degenerative meniscus tears.

Hip Injections

We use hyaluronic acid injections for the treatment of various hip conditions such as hip tendinitis, hip bursitis, intraosseous hip edema, coxarthrosis, and hip osteoarthritis.

Ankle Injections

Hyaluronic acid is also indicated for intraosseous ankle edema and ankle osteoarthritis.

How Long Do the Effects Usually Last?

The effects of a hyaluronic acid injection typically last about 12 months.

How are knee gel injections performed?

During the initial visit before treatment with hyaluronic acid for your knee injection, please inform us about any health problems, allergies, and regular medications you are taking. On the day of the injection, wear loose-fitting clothing to allow easy access to the joint during the procedure.

Hyaluronic acid injections procedure

The hyaluronic acid injection procedure includes the following steps:

  1. You will lie or sit in a position that allows easy access to the target joint.
  2. We disinfect the skin at the injection site and administer local anaesthesia.
  3. Ultrasound may be used to guide the needle to the exact location in the joint.
  4. Excess fluid from the joint is removed by aspiration.
  5. Hyaluronic acid is then injected into the desired joint site(s).

After gel injections

  • We advise resting for 12 to 24 hours after the injection.
  • We may also recommend applying ice packs and taking analgesics to relieve discomfort.
  • Avoid strenuous activities such as running, sports, heavy lifting, or prolonged standing for 48 hours after the injection.
  • Low-impact exercises or physical therapy can help recover and improve mobility in the affected joint.

How much does a knee gel injection cost?

We use intra-articular hyaluronic acid injections to help our patients return to their optimal level of health and function, often avoiding the need for joint surgery or prosthesis placement.

The price for an injection of hyaluronic acid in the knee or other joints such as the shoulder, elbow, or ankle is €180.

This procedure is not routinely performed in public clinics and hospitals as it is not usually covered by social security; however, this may vary depending on the criteria of the medical professional, hospital directives, and regional policies.
