What is bursitis in the knee?
Bursitis gets its name from the bursae, which are small fluid-filled sacs found between the bones and soft tissues.
The function of the bursae is to help reduce friction caused by movement.
Knee bursitis is one of its most frequent forms.
Knee bursitis is a painful inflammation of the bursae around the knee.
Causes of knee bursitis
Bursitis is usually associated with excessive or repetitive use of the areas surrounding the joints.
For example, patients who kneel, especially on harder surfaces (carpenters, road workers, etc.), for prolonged periods of time are at risk of developing knee bursitis.
It can also be caused by direct trauma (hitting the knee against a table which could produce a fluid leak in the knee), or by an infection.
There are multiple bursae in the knee area, and all of them have the potential to become inflamed. However, there are two areas of the knee that are most susceptible to bursitis: the patella and the lower, inner knee.
Knee bursitis can be quite painful, and the pain can decrease mobility.
Treatments for knee bursitis usually focus on relieving pain, reducing inflammation and improving mobility.
What are the symptoms of knee bursitis?
Most people with knee bursitis experience pain.
Other symptoms vary depending on the affected bursa and the underlying cause of the bursitis.
Most cases of knee bursitis are the result of friction and irritation.
- When bursitis is caused by friction and irritation of the bursa, symptoms tend to gradually increase.
People who spend a lot of time kneeling on hard surfaces have an increased risk of developing this type of knee bursitis.
- Knee bursitis can also occur after a traumatic injury, such as a blow to the knee. If this occurs, symptoms may appear quickly.
The pain of bursitis may worsen with movement, but may also occur at rest.
In addition to pain, people with knee bursitis may experience tenderness, swelling and warmth around the affected area.
If the bursa is infected, you may also have a fever. If you have a fever in addition to knee pain or swelling, call your doctor right away.
Diagnosis of knee bursitis
Dr. Miguel Alfonso Porcar expert in the treatment of knee bursitis makes the diagnosis.
- If you have knee bursitis, your orthopedic surgeon can give you a diagnosis without any tests. A physical examination and a medical history may be sufficient to obtain an accurate diagnosis.
- However, we may order tests to rule out other conditions or injuries. These tests may include X-rays, ultrasound and MRI.
- If there are indications that you may have an infected bursa, we can take a sample of fluid from one or more bursae of the knee with a fine needle.
Knee bursitis treatments
Once you have been diagnosed with knee bursitis, we will likely start with conservative treatment. Bursitis usually improves over time, sometimes even without treatment, and in most cases, does not require surgery.
Treatment is usually aimed at relieving symptoms while the body heals the inflamed bursa.
Treatment options can range from lifestyle changes to medications, physical therapy or steroid injections .
These types of medical treatments are often effective in treating knee bursitis, and can help control pain and, in turn, improve mobility.
Medication
Dr. Miguel Alfonso Porcar can prescribe analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce inflammation, reduce pain and treat possible infection.
Physiotherapy
Physical therapy exercises can help reduce pain, improve flexibility, strengthen the muscles around the knee and help prevent bursitis from recurring in the future.
Knee bursitis steroid injection
If the bursitis persists and does not respond to medication, we may administer corticosteroid injections into the affected bursa, following ultrasound-guided evacuation of the bursa, to help reduce pain and inflammation.
Orthopedic appliances
While the bursa heals, we may recommend a protective knee brace or assistive device, such as a cane or crutches, to reduce pressure on the area.
Compression sleeves can also help reduce swelling and provide support.
Orthopedic surgery
If you are suffering from severe or chronic knee bursitis, and when infiltration no longer works it may be necessary to remove the affected bursa.
Most people with knee bursitis do not require surgery, but if more conservative treatments do not work and you have significant pain or severely impaired mobility, surgery may be an option.
In Regenerat clinic, we perform the ultrasound-guided evacuation of the inflammatory liquid from the bursa, through a small incision.
It is a minimally invasive procedure, which we perform in the minor surgery operating room we have in our clinic.
Minimally invasive surgery has many benefits over traditional surgery, including reduced pain, a shorter recovery period, and less scarring.
